About Blue Pottery Online

Blue Pottery is widely recognised as a traditional craft of Jaipur city in Indian state of Rajasthan. The origin is Turko-Persian. The art of blue pottery which gives a shiny glazed finish on the pots was developed by the Mughal artisans who gave a blend to Chinese glazing expertise with Persian ornamental arts. They developed this art in 14th century and used it in decorating mosques, palaces and tombs in Central Asia. With the Mughal conquests of India, this technique came to India and first to Delhi.

Whether the beginning of blue pottery in Jaipur was around 17th or 19th century, is still in question. However, there are resources which state that blue pottery made its entry into Jaipur only during the early 19th century under the reign of Sawai Ram Singh II (1835 – 1880) who sent his artisans to Delhi to get trained and learn the technique involved in making of blue pottery. However, this art was completely washed out from Jaipur by 1950s, only to be reintroduced later by the efforts of the muralist and painter Kripal Singh Shekhawat.

The name blue pottery is derived from the eye catching blue dye used to colour the pottery. The blue pottery jaipur is prepared by using Egyption paste and dough obtained by mixing quartz stone powder, powdered glass, Multani Mitti, borax, gum and water. The colour palette is restricted to blue derived from the cobalt oxide and green from the copper oxide. Other nonconventional colours namely yellow and brown are sometimes used.

The art of blue pottery is the only technique which is produced without the use of clay. It takes about 15-20 days to finish the products, making the blue pottery making process a very tedious one. Still only the traditional method is followed by the artisans of Jaipur. The final product may not be exactly similar to what was planned originally. This is one of the main features which keeps the craftsmen interested in continuing to keep this craft alive.

The range of rajasthan blue pottery is primarily decorative. Some of this pottery is semi transparent and mostly decorated with animal and bird motifs. Since they are low fired at very low temperature, it makes them fragile and brittle.  Today blue pottery jaipur is an industry that provides livelihood to thousands of people in Jaipur. The traditional designs have been adapted and now apart from the usual urns, jars, pots and vases, one can also find tea sets, cups and saucers, plates and glasses, jugs, ashtrays and napkin rings.  A decorative Blue Pottery plate from Jaipur used as beautiful wall decor plate will enhance and give very rich look to one's home. Wonderfully designed pottery with Elephant face and other handicraft items are available in abundance, which will enhance the decoration of one's drawing rooms in appearance and artistic look.
