Meenakari is the art of painting or embellishing metal surface with vibrant colors. The metal may be gold, silver, faux etc. Various motifs of birds, leaves and flowers are painted in this way. Mina is the feminine form of Minoo in Persian and this means heaven. Mina is the Azure color of heaven. This art was invented by the Iranian craftsmen and it came to India circa 1500s by the Mughal king, Shah Jahan. Now Meenakari is a much practiced art in Rajasthan. It was Raja Mansingh of Amber, a noble in Shah Jahan's court who brought skilled artisans from Lahore to Rajasthan in the 16th century and encouraged Meenakari Jewellery making. Presently Jaipur is the hub of Meenakari art and the craftsmen here are extremely skilled and famous for producing Meenakari work. Meenakari jewellery Jaipur consists of a wide range of jewelleries with intricate and creative designs. Bikaner, Udaipur and Nathdwara are well-known for their silver Meenakari. Apart from Jaipur, Meenakari is practiced in other parts of India too like Delhi and Banaras. Meenakari from Varanasi is characterized by a Pink shade on white paint and often employs a lotus pattern. This style was brought from Persian craftsmen who visited Lucknow in the 17th century.

The artisans making this jewellery are called Meenakars and they belong to Sonar or Sohali caste of Kshatriyas. Since this is a traditional craft, outsiders are rarely included in its making. The process of making this jewellery is a long one and a single piece of Meena passes through a number of expert hands before it is completed.

The traditional process starts with the designer and then it is passed to the goldsmith, the engraver, the enamellist for applying the color (Meenakar), the polisher, the stone setter and the stringer. With years of experience, a single artisan can do all this work.

Nowadays white metal is also used in Meenakari, which has made it affordable for the masses. Each metal has its own qualities. When it is gold, you can use any color easily on it. On silver only green, blue and yellow can be used. For jewelleries, gold is the most used base metal.
