Saree -  A symbol of our heritage

Saree is a garment, a piece of cloth of a length of 5 to 6 yards (sometimes up to 9 yards) and 2 to 4 feet in breadth that is typically wrapped around the waist, with one end draped over the shoulder baring the midriff, traditionally worn by women from South Asia. The sari is won over a petticoat and a top called as blouse. The variety of colors, patterns, weaves and draping styles make the saree one of the world’s most fascinating costumes.  Hundreds of regional weaving centers are still engaged in traditional handloom products apart from various modern textile mills.

The history of Indian clothing traces the saree back to the Indus Valley Civilization which flourished from 2800-1800 B.C. The earliest known depiction of the saree in the Indian subcontinent is the statue of an Indus valley priest wearing a drape.

Sarees are made from different material or fabric like Cotton, Silk, Crepe, Georgette, Chiffon etc. In ancient times, Sarees were hand woven and made of cotton and silk. Now with technical advancement, synthetic fibers like nylon, polyesters and rayon are being used for the manufacture of Sarees. Some other modern sari fabric are Georgette, Crepe, Chiffon etc. Sarees are worn according to climate, functions and festivals and occasions.  A cotton saree is normally worn in summer while Sarees made of other materials like Silk, Georgette, Crepe, Chiffon etc. are usually worn during different functions and occasions.

Not just the fabric but sarees can also be distinguished by the type of work like Embroidery, Jardosi, Jamavar Kashmere handworks, Parsi work etc. which enhance the beauty and glory of modern woman. Different saree styles have evolved over the decades. The new trend in saree is lehenga sareeswhich is an aesthetic blend of the traditional Saree and Lehenga choli.
