About Assam Silk Sarees Online

Assam silk sarees are made up of three types of wild silk, which are Golden muga silk, warm eri and white pat. Assam muga silk sarees are the most durable silk sarees. Muga silk is produced only in Assam, has natural lustrous sheen and has a natural beautiful brown color. Muga silk sarees have a shimmering golden color and no dye is required for them. The brightness of the saree improves with each wash. The border and the pallu of the saree are decorated with motifs and butis, which include symbols of birds, human figure, creepers, flowers, galaxies, channels, cross borders and ornamental designs. Traditional colors are used for weaving motifs and butis, like red, black and green. These colors look very attractive on the golden colored sarees. Nowadays other colors are also used.

Pat silk saree has a white or cream sheen and the pat fabric can be bleached and dyed into different vibrant colors. Traditional motifs of butis, animals, creepers, human figures, flowers, birds, channel and other ornamental designs are seen woven on the border and the body of the Pat saree. The wedding sari of Assamese women is created with traditional intricate gold and silver embroidery on the Pat silk sari and the entire body of the silk sari is with muga silk.

The yarn of eri silk is spun with hand only and thus the sarees made from eri silk are coarser and not as fine as other types of silk sarees. They are also not very shiny. But they keep you warm.

Assam silk originated from a place called Sualkuchi which is the central hub for textiles in Assam. The weaving industry is confined to a few communities who have taken up the business in silk weaving as their full time job. Post Second World War, this industry emerged as one of the fast developing industries in Assam.

Assam silk sarees are quite famous all over the nation due to their fine work and a unique look, which make them even more special. However, Assam silk is still not popular globally because of its limited product profile, which are restricted mostly to the traditional attire for men and women. Although diversification is taking place, it has still not reached its potential and needs more attention.
