About Kanchipuram Sarees Online

Kanchipuram is a town near Chennai in Tamil Nadu and is famous all over the country for the exquisite Kanchipuram silk sarees made by the weavers here. According to Hindu mythology, Kanchi silk weavers are the descendants of Sage Markanda, the master weaver of Gods who is supposed to have woven tissue from lotus fibre. The weaving communities (Devangas and Saligars) making this saree are believed to have settled here about 400 years back, during the reign of Vijayanagara emperor Krishnadeva Raya.

Kanchipuram sarees are made of pure silk and are considered as the best among the other silks in the world. No wonder it is known as the queen of the sarees. They are hand-woven and are noted for their special weaving technique where three single silk threads are used along with the single zari thread. Mulberry silk is the main raw material. Kanjivaram sarees are very popular in South India, as also in other parts of India. No wedding in South India is considered complete without the bride wearing a Kanchipuram Saree. It is known for its unique texture, refinements and its durability. The border of the saree is made with gold zari and also contains motifs and dots. The color of the border may contrast with the body of the sari or it may match the rest of the sari. Originally in a Kanjivaram sari, pallav and body were woven separately and interlocked together but these days they are woven together. Most of the work is done on the pallu. Motifs of these saris draw inspiration from natural forms of temple architecture like peacock, parrot, temple designs, scenes from religious books like Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagwad gita.

The elegance and luxury of Kanjivaram silk saree makes the wearer look like a princess. It is very expensive but the quality and the time spent on its making is worth the price. The price depends on how heavy the sari is. The more heavy a saree is, the higher is the price. Kanchipuram is said to have more than 20,000 looms and at each loom, three to four weavers are at work. They produce 4 to 5 lakhs of sareees every year.  It takes about 30 days to complete one saree.

Since 2005, Kanchipuram sarees are protected by a Geographical indication label, certifying their origin.
