About Kota Sarees

Made with pure cotton and silk, Kota Sarees, popularly known as Kota Doria sarees, are produced in India at Kota, Rajasthan and Muhammadabad Gohna, Mau in Uttar Pradesh, as well as in the nearby areas. This saree was originally called Masuria because they were made by the weavers in Mysore. Then in late 17th and early 18th century, these weavers were brought to Kota in Rajasthan by a General in the Mughal army, Rao Kishore Singh. Since then, these sarees also came to be known as 'Kota Masuria' or 'Masuria Malmal.'

The Ansari community of Hadauti region is mainly engaged in the production of kota sarees, in addition to many villages in South Rajasthan like Bundi and Baran. There are three different varieties of kota sarees, which are basic, printed and zari.

Though the saris found in Rajasthan have a high yarn count, Kota is famous for its fine weaves and low yarn count, primarily due to the presence of Chambar, a perennial river, which makes the air moisture-laden. The greenery present in the otherwise dry state and the presence of black soil also contributes the cultivation of excellent quality cotton in the area. Kota has the distinction of being one of the three fine count cotton producing regions in the northern part of India, the other two being Chanderi and Maheshwar.

Earlier, Kota doria sarees were only white or beige in color and a favorite with the Royal family in Rajasthan. Now, with the changing times, you get kota sarees in all colors. They are light in weight and can be worn in all seasons. Kota cotton sarees are best to wear in summer months. It is easy to maintain, comfortable and keep you cool. Originally only cotton was used in making kota sarees, but later silk was also blended with cotton to give Kota silk sarees. The cotton provides strength to the fabric, while silk makes it more lustrous and lends it a softer touch.

The checked pattern or ‘khat’ as it is termed locally, is one of the most distinguishing features of Kota sarees. Pure cotton with golden zari threads woven in square patterns is a variety that is very popular with the customers. Variations in borders and a whole array of bright colors and shades like pink, blue, saffron, orange etc. applied to traditional prints and beautiful embroidery work create stunning effects. The stylish block floral or geometrical prints on the kota cotton sari with zari temple border is lovely attire for all functions.

The yarn is made strong and durable by applying a paste made of rice and onion. This paste is applied with much care on the yarn and once it is applied, any additional finishing is not needed. Nowadays you get kota sarees with embroidery and border patches, which make them all the more exclusive.

Kota doria has also been deemed as a Geographical Indication (GI) for its uniqueness and its connection to the traditions and customs of the people of the region.
