Mekhela Chadars (Mekhela Chadors or Mekhela Chaddars), a rare blend of simplicity and beauty, are made from cotton, muga silk, pat silk and eri silk and have beautifully designed borders. Ornamental designs on the mekhela chadors are traditionally woven, never printed. Women of all ages in Assam have been wearing this attire since time immemorial both at home and on special occasions.

About Mekhela Chador Online

Mekhela Chador is a type of saree worn by the women of Assam. This is the traditional attire of the Assamese women. Mekhela Chadar consists of mainly two pieces of clothes. The bottom half is called ‘mekhela’. This is cylindrically shaped attire and extends from the waist to the toes. It is folded into pleats to fit around the waist and tucked in. The chador is the piece that covers the upper part of your body. One end of it is tucked in to the upper portion of Mekhela and the other end is draped around the torso, like a pallu. In addition to these two pieces of clothes, a blouse that fits properly is also worn nowadays. Earlier another piece of cloth called ‘riha’ was worn instead of a blouse.
