Narayanpet Sarees

Simple yet elegant Narayanpet Sarees feature a distinct Maharashtrian tradition with their weaves and are characterized by dark earthly colours, traditional borders and pallus that contrast with the colours on the body of the saree, small geometrical motifs along the borders embroidered in zari which lend a rich look to the saree. Narayanpet Silk sarees are lightweight, fall beautifully while draped and look regal on the wearer. Narayanpet Cotton sarees, while mostly plain, may also use colored checks on the body, in order to lend them that ethnic look.

About Narayanpet Sarees Online

Narayanpet Sarees owe their name to the town of Narayanpet in Mahbubnagar district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Narayanpet sarees came into existence through a Maratha influence, under the patronage of Chatrapati Shivaji. It is said that when Shivaji went to Narayanpet region in 1630 A.D., camped there for a while and continued again, some of the weavers stayed behind. These weavers started weaving these sarees. Later on, under the rule of Lokapalli Sansathanam, the production of Narayanpet Silk Sarees and Narayanpet Cotton sarees increased dramatically.

Narayanpet Handloom Sarees are available in cotton or cotton-silk mix and are woven in dark earthy colours. The signature design of Narayanpet sarees involves a border and pallu that contrast with the colours on the body of the saree. Small geometrical motifs along the borders, embroidered in zari often glint through the delicate folds of the fabric, enhancing its appeal. Their lightness, durability, affordability and easy maintenance serves to make them an instant favourite to wear for a variety of occasions, including auspicious events, formal functions and cocktail parties.

The making of a Narayanpet sari is as interesting as its history. This is a unique process where eight sarees are made at one go on a loom. Thus instead of the standard 7 yards of fabric being mounted on the loom, 56 yards of Silk are mounted on the loom at a single time. In the case of Cotton sarees, it takes one day to complete a saree, whereas a Silk saree takes 4-5 days to be completed.

In 2012, Narayanpet sarees got its Geographical Indicator (GI) registration with the government of India.
